What is Duolingo Max?
Duolingo Max includes all the benefits of Super Duolingo, along with three AI-powered features: Explain My Answer, Roleplay and Video Call with Lily.
Availability
Currently, Duolingo Max is available on the iOS and Android version of the Duolingo app. Duolingo Max cannot be purchased on web.
Some AI-powered features are not available across all courses. If you are learning a course that is not yet supported, you will still have access to Super Duolingo benefits.
Explain My Answer and Roleplay
Stuck on a mistake? No problem! With Explain My Answer, you’ll get helpful tips and extra insights to clear up any confusion on specific exercises.
Roleplay allows learners to practice real-world conversation skills with our characters in the app. You’ll encounter different scenarios with each character, whether it’s ordering a coffee with Lin or going furniture shopping with Eddy.
These features are available to English speakers learning: French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Italian. They are also available for: English for Spanish speakers, English for Portuguese speakers, English for Japanese speakers, English for German speakers and English for French speakers.
Video call with Lily
Duolingo Max subscribers can check out Video Call with Lily. Practice your conversational skills with on-demand video calls with our Duolingo character, Lily.
Video Call is available to Duolingo Max subscribers on iOS and Android learning English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese. You can find Video Call on the path and in the Practice Hub.
How to subscribe
All eligible free learners can subscribe to Duolingo Max by navigating to the Practice hub (dumbbell icon) and tapping the “Unlock with Max” button in the Android or iOS app.
Duolingo Max cannot be accessed through our web platform, the features are only available on the mobile app.
Family Plan
Duolingo Max can be purchased as an individual subscription, or as a family plan to share with 5 other users! If a member of your family plan does not use the mobile app version of Duolingo, or is learning a course that does not currently support Max features, they will still have access to all other Super Duolingo subscription features (unlimited hearts, no ads, mistakes review, etc).
Upgrading From Super Duolingo
Existing Super Duolingo Subscribers (including Family Plan managers) can upgrade to a Duolingo Max subscription from the Duolingo iOS or Android app:
Tap the Shop tab (blue gem icon) at the top of the screen to visit the shop and upgrade to Max!
Head over to the Practice hub, and you can upgrade through the Roleplay button or Video Call with Lily banner.
Throughout your lessons along the path, you’ll see Video Call and Explain my Answer. You’ll also be able to upgrade here.
Currently, web subscriptions do not have the ability to upgrade to Duolingo Max.
When you upgrade with Apple, Apple will bill you for the full price of the Duolingo Max subscription, and issue a prorated refund for your previous Super Duolingo subscription based on how much time is remaining in your previous subscription period.
NOTE: Some Super Duolingo subscription plans are not eligible to upgrade to all Duolingo Max subscription plans. When you upgrade your current subscription, you will see the eligible Duolingo Max plans.
